What Is a Potassium Intake Calculator?
A potassium intake calculator estimates potassium from foods, drinks, supplements and salt substitutes you enter. Quick mode works when you already know daily totals. Food and supplement log mode adds items one by one. Reference-value mode returns a general adequate intake value based on age, sex and life stage.
The result remains an estimate because potassium values vary by food variety, ripeness, cooking method, draining, portion size, brand, fortification, country and product formulation. The calculator does not measure blood potassium or diagnose low potassium, high potassium, kidney disease or another condition.
How Much Potassium Do Adults Need?
Current U.S. adequate intake values from the National Academies, summarized by NIH ODS, list 3,400 mg/day for adult men and 2,600 mg/day for adult women. Pregnancy is listed at 2,900 mg/day for ages 19-50, and lactation at 2,800 mg/day. These are general population reference values, not individualized prescriptions or blood-potassium targets.

How the Potassium Calculator Works

Reference percentage = daily potassium / reference value x 100
Potassium mEq = potassium mg / 39.1
